Larry Lieber

Larry Lieber is a pioneering writer, artist, and creator who helped build the Marvel Universe. Best known as the co-creator of Iron Man, Thor, Ant-Man, and Groot, Lieber collaborated with many giants of the comic book world, including Jack Kirby, Steve Ditko, Stan Lee, John Romita, and more. Working during Marvel’s explosive Silver Age, Lieber scripted many of the origin stories that would later be adapted into blockbuster films, beloved cartoons, and enduring comic book runs. Born in 1931 in New York City, Lieber served in the United States Air Force during the Korean War and was the younger brother of Stan Lee. He quickly established a creative identity all his own. It was Lieber who scripted the stories that introduced Thor in Journey into Mystery #83, Iron Man in Tales of Suspense #39, and Ant-Man in Tales to Astonish #27 and #35, laying the groundwork for what would become the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Lieber’s talents extended well beyond superheroes. As both writer and artist, he helmed Rawhide Kid for nearly two decades, transforming it into one of the most acclaimed Western series in comic book history. For 32 years, Lieber was the artist for The Amazing Spider-Man newspaper strip, bringing Peter Parker’s daily adventures to millions of readers around the world. He also wrote and drew The Incredible Hulk newspaper strip. In 2025, at the age of 93, Lieber made a bold leap into fiction with the release of his debut prose novel, Chirps. An adventurous yet philosophical sci-fi tale, the novel tells the story of a genetically enhanced parakeet who develops human intelligence. Through the eyes of this unlikely protagonist, Chirps finds himself in a hostile world trying to escape capture by governments. The novel explores themes of identity, belonging, scientific ethics, and what it means to be truly sentient. The novel has been praised for its emotional insight, humor, originality, and a cast of unforgettable characters- all hallmarks of Lieber’s storytelling since his earliest days at Marvel.
